Greetings from a very warm Dubai and the the 2014 ACTME Annual Conference!
Always a pleasure to be here, gearing up for 2 days of the very best in corporate treasury learning, sharing and networking. We will be underway when this is uploaded so once you have finished reading me, please follow us on Twitter @actupdate#meac14!
The travelling roadshow that is the ACT flagship conference series added its fourth leg (to the UK, Middle East and Asia) at the end of June in Dusseldorf.
We were delighted to work closely with the German treasury and CFO associations, the VDT and GEFIU respectively and IAFEI to produce our first full day formal conference in continental Europe. And boy, did we have a show!
I left this blog last night before our ‘Eat, Drink, Connect’ festivities. How did it go? A resounding success is definitely the verdict even though some of us bailed out fairly early! And then, Wow! That was the way to end!
A fantastic turnout for the Question Time panel moderated by Kirsty Wark. Great entertainment, some lively debate and a really bright, engaged audience. And that could easily be our theme for the whole conference!
I am writing at the end of the work day but before the evening ‘Eat, Drink, Connect’ networking event.
A wise move you might say – although I am moderating a Track session at 9am on Friday morning and there’s a talkingtreasury at 8am to get us started! Hopefully there won’t be a fire alarm going off in my hotel tonight – a 1.30am wake up call which some people enjoyed will not make me happy!
Well, the stands were built on time, the registration desk was primed and ready and all the great staff at the SECC fully briefed: off we went! Even the weather was playing its part in keeping delegates dry – at least on the way in!
So, my companion and I were on our way to the airport…boarding pass, check. Delegate and exhibitor lists, check. Razor..er..no, but hey I’ll rock the 3-day-growth look, check. Passport..er.. what do I need a passport for, says my travelling companion? Isn’t Scotland part of the UK? (No, don’t start, we’re not having that debate here!).
Annual conferences for professional associations can often have a whiff of ‘holier than thou’.
Well, guess what, the ACT is no different and frankly there’s no reason why we should be! In fact we go further than most to put on a show and what’s more, it’s all our own work. This year the charabanc is on its way to Glasgow and we’re almost ready to roll!
The latest in a series of blogs from your conference correspondent
Well, I don’t think we expected that! More than 180 people representing many of the region’s leading companies queuing up to get their registration badges was a sight for the tired but delighted eyes of the ACT team. Tired because of jet lag but delighted because of the turnout, the welcome and the enthusiasm of our delegates. Mind you, the best sight of the day was the 7.15am coffee run by your correspondent and his colleague for the team and our exhibitors: never was coffee more needed or gratefully accepted!
